For those of you that are familar with our family, you would know that Kevin, Becca and Little Kevin all have Hypoparathyroidism. It is an inherited disease that prevents their bodies from absorbing calcium. The low calcium levels can lead to many problems including Teteny, seizures, and muscle cramping. This morning our Pediatrician checked Sean's calcium levels and unfortunately he also has hypoparathyroidism. This morning was rough for me and I broke down. I know that this is completely treatable, but I really wanted to take my baby home today. Originally the Dr. wanted to put in a central line and admit him to the NICU, but after consulting with the Endocrinologist they agreed to give Sean his meds orally and recheck him in the morning. If his levels have increased there is a good chance he can come home and have daily blood draws to check his calcium until we go to Children's Hospital on Wed. If the meds did not work he will be admitted to the NICU and have a central line put in to administer his calcium. He is eating really well and looks great, so hopefully he can come home.
He also has Renal Pelvic Dilation which will be assessed early next week via ultrasound. The Dr. seems confident that all will be fine with that. He is down to 6lbs. 6 oz from his birth weight of 6lbs. 15 oz. The weight loss is normal, and now that my milk is coming in he should gain it all back plus some.
All in all I have to say that even though we have hit a bump in the road, we are trully blessed with our little miracle.
